Machine learning based design appraisal and basic understanding of deep convolutional neural network

Room: room 133,, Bldg: Copernicus Hall ,

Co-sponsored by: CCSU There will be a  IEEE Connecticut Robotics and Automation Chapter meeting on Wednesday March 7th 1:40pm at Central Connecticut State University. Mr. Wei Chian Tan will give a presentation about deep learning in mechanical design in robotics and automation industry. All IEEE members and Non-IEEE members are welcome to this event. This talk also will be available online. Start Date/Time: Wednesday, March 7th, 2018 1:40pm End Date/Time: Wednesday, March 7th, 2018 3:20pm Location:  Copernicus Hall room 133,Central Connecticut State University,1615 Stanley Street, New Britain CT 06050-4010 Speaker: Mr. Wei Chian Tan  Abstract:Design appraisal has been an important process in marine and offshore industry. Before a design of ship or offshore platform is constructed in the industry, it is necessary to ensure the design complies with applicable rules for safe and smooth operation. First part of the talk will give a brief introduction to the industry and recent work on machine learning based automation of design appraisal. Based on representation known as Histogram of Connectivity and linear Support Vector Machine, developed method has demonstrated encouraging performance on two case studies, namely International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships and Rules for Classification of Ships of Lloyd's Register. The talk will also cover some recent challenges in the industry that may be solved by data driven approaches, including but not limited to automated visual inspection and navigation planning. Second part of the talk will focus on ongoing and open research in intersection of deep learning and neuroscience, basically trying to visualise what deep convolutional neural network has learnt and compare the activities with those from human brain. Speaker's biography:Wei Chian Tan is a research engineer at Lloyd's Register Global Technology Centre Singapore, working on application of machine learning and computer vision to problems in marine and offshore industry. He is a PhD candidate (Mechanical, Automation) at Nanyang Technological University, after obtaining B.Eng. (Mechanical) and M.Eng. (Computer) from the same institution. Speaker(s): Wei Chian Tan, Agenda: 1:40pm to 2:40pm Lecture 2:40pm to 3:20pm Q&A Location: Room: room 133, Bldg: Copernicus Hall , 1615 Stanley Street, Central Connecticut State University New Britain , Connecticut 06050-4010
