The supervisor of the Substation Automation division at Eversource Energy in Connecticut, Michael Lopes, will give a talk about the work environment and career opportunities. Michael Lopes has eleven years of experience working within the Field Communications Department. Michael specializes in Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems and numerous communication systems. Michael supervises a team of engineers and technicians that perform maintenance, training, and upgrades for the Eversource SCADA system and its associated communication hardware and software. Michael’s team works in the dynamic field of rapidly improving technology with Substation communication upgrades, Wind and Solar Distributive Generation, Volt and Var Optimization Systems, PV Solar Battery Sites, and various other systems being added to the Eversource Power Grid. The talk will be about model predictive control which is a powerful control technique that is widely used in the process industries. A control strategy uses mathematical models of a process to predict future behavior and optimize control actions. The technique is particularly useful for controlling complex, dynamic systems, and has been applied in many different areas such as chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering. In this seminar, Dr. Lou will cover the principles of model predictive control and provide practical examples of its application in Chemical Looping process (CL).
